Dietitians aren’t really taught counseling skills.

Instead, we’re taught:
See a diagnosis, give a handout, word vomit a rehearsed education spiel, and send the client on their merry way.

We weren’t trained to meet people in their humanity, and that’s where we are falling short.

Welcome to Counseling Skills for Dietitians Who Give a Damn!

A virtual course for RDs & RDs2Be who want to connect, not just educate.

This training might be a good fit if:

  • You want to strengthen your trauma-informed, weight-neutral counseling skills

  • You feel stuck when clients don’t appear to be motivated for change

  • You’re unsure what to say in uncomfortable or emotional moments in session

  • You worry you're outside your scope if not delivering nutrition education or tangible "to-do's"

  • You’d like to feel more comfortable and confident that you’re providing non-coercive, compassionate care

  • You want to examine and unpack your own privilege and biases a bit more in order to better serve your community

  • You often leave sessions feeling overwhelmed, panicked, or upset

  • You crave sessions where your clients lead the way and tell you what they want

  • You’re just getting started and want to get off on the right foot when you begin seeing clients

  • You want to build stronger relationships with your clients and have more positive outcomes in the work

This course is different than other counseling programs.

Here's how:

Skills That Reflect Your Values

You shouldn’t have to choose between building counseling skills and holding true to your values of equity, inclusion, and client-centered care. While many trainings focus narrowly on a single method (Motivational Interviewing, trauma-informed care, etc.), this course recognizes the complexity of real-world counseling. We’ll blend social justice awareness, trauma-informed principles, and practical counseling techniques into one experience — so your growth as a clinician reflects the whole of who you are and the clients you serve.

Beyond the Basics

This isn’t just a course you watch, it’s one you practice. You’ll move past theory into real-world application, using case studies, roleplays, and reflective exercises to strengthen your skills in real time. We’ll tackle the nuanced situations you actually face with clients: when sessions get stuck, when conversations turn emotional, when systems impact care — so you can respond with clarity, compassion, and confidence. By the end, you won’t just “know about” counseling skills, you’ll be using them fluently.

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Charlie Golightly RD, MPP-D, RYT

Hi, I’m Charlie!

I use they/them pronouns and run a private practice in Denver, Colorado. I’m thrilled that you’re considering this training with me!

I’m passionate about creating relationships and therapeutic bonds that are rooted in harm reduction and compassionate care - and it seems you are too!

As an eating disorder provider, I know what it’s like to hold the line between concern and collaboration, inner wisdom and “shoulds.” I love supporting other dietitians as they unpack and re-learn how to deeply connect with their clients while also honoring their own needs.

I deeply value my relationships and the interconnectedness of us all, and I hope this training fosters a deeper connection with yourself and the clients who are lucky to have you.

Are you ready to show up?
